Athena Doily by Grace Fearon

Athena is a beautifully textured doily designed by Grace Fearon.  You can find all of her patterns here.  She also has a Facebook Support Group where you can see when she releases new designs, ask questions & see what others are creating.

Athena MCAL (Mystery Crochet A Long) was put on by Grace Fearon, the designer, during the months of May & June.  If you are an experienced crocheter but new to Grace's designs, I highly recommend starting with one of her patterns that she has done a CAL with.  These patterns come with diagram overlays & sometimes videos of complicated stitches.  All of her patterns are VERY well written.  However, she uses unique & advanced stitches and having a diagram overlay can provide clarification should you become confused.  None of her patterns come with charts.  She does provide excellent support on her Facebook Support Group.  If you are newer to crochet, I recommend starting with one of her Free patterns.  These are often less complicated & a great place to become familiar with her way of pattern writing.

A note about yarn usage.  If you'd like to create something in a different yarn called for, you can crochet the first 22 Rounds & compare the amount of yarn you've used to how much yarn I used.  (Up to Round 22 of mine used 14% of my total yarn.)  This comparison will give you a good idea of how much more yarn you will need to complete your project.  Continue weighing the yarn you've used on each Round like I have done.  As long as your yarn usage is similar to mine, you will have enough yarn.  Here is the scale I use that seems to do a fairly accurate job.

Measurements
Unless otherwise noted, measurements are across the unblocked diameter
Part 3 (Round 22) - 7 3/4"
Part 4 (Round 30) - 11"
Part 5 (Round 36) - 14”
Part 6 (Round 42) - 16"
Part 7 (Round 48) - 17 1/2"
I won't be blocking this until I am ready to display it.

If you have trouble identifying stitches, you may want to mark the stitches of Round 4 that you will be using to work a FP-5TC-popcorn around in Round 7.  You can also look at the wrong side of the doily to find these stitches since the Picot strips block their view.

After complicated rounds of Part 1, the other Parts are relatively simple.  (Although I would still rate them intermediate in difficulty.  This is NOT a beginner pattern.)

If you're running short on yarn, Round 45 has this pretty chain edging.
Round 46 is where my first ball of Knitpicks Curio ran out.
